The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly, Hon. Abubakar Sedik, on Friday, February 6, 2026, led a joint operation to clamp down on illegal mining activities along the Kunsu–Odoyefe road.

The exercise was conducted in collaboration with the District Police Command and a special task force as part of the Assembly\'s sustained efforts to protect the environment and safeguard lives and property in the District.

During the operation, one person engaged in illegal mining (galamsey) was arrested, while others fled the scene upon the arrival of the task force. Several mining pits created by the illegal miners were identified along the stretch.

On Monday, February 9, 2026, the District Assembly supervised the covering of the dangerous pits left behind by the illegal miners to prevent accidents and further environmental degradation.

Addressing the media, Hon. Abubakar Sedik reiterated his firm commitment to fighting illegal mining in all parts of the District.

He warned individuals engaged in galamsey to desist from the practice, stressing that the Assembly, in collaboration with security agencies, will continue to intensify operations to rid the District of the menace.

The DCE further called on residents to support the Assembly by reporting illegal mining activities to the appropriate authorities, adding that the fight against galamsey remains ongoing until the District\'s lands and water bodies are fully protected.
