The Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly, under the leadership of the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Abubakar Sedik, on Monday, July 27, 2026, officially handed over the Bonkwaso Maternity Home and its staff quarters to Famag Enterprise for renovation and upgrading into a fully functional Health Centre.

The project, funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), forms part of the Assembly's commitment to improving healthcare delivery and expanding access to quality medical services across the District.

Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, Hon. Abubakar Sedik emphasised that improving healthcare remains one of his administration's top priorities, stressing that the well-being of the people is central to the District's development agenda.

He charged the contractor to execute the project with the highest level of professionalism and quality while ensuring that local artisans and labourers are employed throughout the construction period to stimulate the local economy and create employment opportunities for residents.

"Our commitment is to provide quality healthcare infrastructure for our people because health is essential to development. I expect the contractor to deliver quality work within the stipulated time while creating job opportunities for members of the community," the DCE stated.

The District Works Engineer, Engineer Beatrice Boatemaa, outlined the scope of the project, explaining that it includes a complete renovation of the existing maternity home and staff quarters, the construction of a perimeter wall around the one-acre facility, and the installation of a mechanised borehole with an overhead storage tank to ensure a reliable water supply.

She disclosed that the project has a contract duration of six months.

The District Director of Health Services, Dr Jerry Amankwah, expressed appreciation to the DCE and the District Assembly for prioritizing healthcare infrastructure.

He revealed that the Bonkwaso Maternity Home currently records between 10 and 15 deliveries and 200 to 300 Out-Patient Department (OPD) cases every month.

According to him, upgrading the facility into a Health Centre and deploying additional experienced health professionals will significantly enhance healthcare delivery and improve access to quality medical services for residents of Bonkwaso and surrounding communities.

The Queen Mother of Bonkwaso No. 1, Nana Penaman II, thanked the District Assembly and Hon. Abubakar Sedik for the intervention. She appealed for future expansion of the facility to accommodate the increasing healthcare needs of the growing population.

The Assembly Member for the Bonkwaso Electoral Area, Hon. Kwao Francis, also expressed gratitude to the DCE for initiating the project, describing it as a major milestone for the electoral area.

He reaffirmed his support for the development initiatives undertaken by the District Chief Executive. He appealed to the Assembly to provide a motorcycle to facilitate the referral of emergency cases from the community.

The upgrading of the Bonkwaso Maternity Home is expected to improve healthcare delivery, reduce pressure on other health facilities in the District, and bring quality healthcare services closer to the people upon its completion within the six-month contract period.
