The Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the lives of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) by providing support to 70 beneficiaries under the Disability Fund.

The beneficiaries received assistance in three key areas: 59 people benefited from economic empowerment support, 10 received medical assistance, and one person was supported in the area of education.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Abubakar Sedik, emphasized that the welfare of Persons with Disabilities remains a priority for his administration.

He noted that since assuming office, the Assembly has consistently ensured that the Disability Fund is used for its intended purpose to improve the lives of beneficiaries.

The DCE highlighted that 96 Persons with Disabilities have benefited from the Fund in 2026 alone, comprising 73 beneficiaries under economic empowerment, 12 under medical support, and 11 under educational assistance.

He further disclosed that a total of 161 PWDs have been supported since 2025 under his leadership.

Hon. Sedik commended President John Dramani Mahama for increasing the allocation of the District Assemblies Common Fund for Persons with Disabilities from 3% to 5%, describing the decision as a significant step towards improving the living conditions of PWDs across the country.

He assured members of the disability community that his office remains open to them at all times and pledged to continue championing programmes that promote their inclusion and socio-economic well-being.

The Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South West, Hon. Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah, urged beneficiaries to make good use of the items and support they had received. He praised the District Chief Executive for ensuring that the Disability Fund is utilised transparently and in accordance with its intended purpose.

The Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mengisto Opoku Akowuah, stated that his office would closely monitor the beneficiaries to ensure the items are used effectively to improve their livelihoods and promote self-reliance.

The President of the Ahafo Ano South West Federation of Persons with Disabilities, Agyenim Boateng, encouraged members to actively participate in meetings and programmes organised by the federation. He expressed appreciation to President Mahama for increasing the allocation to the Disability Fund and thanked the District Assembly, led by Hon. Abubakar Sedik, for its continued commitment to the welfare of Persons with Disabilities.

The Assembly also strengthened disability groups within the District by facilitating the opening of bank accounts for their organisations and providing financial support for their meetings.

Beneficiary organisations include the Ghana Blind Union (GBU), the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD), and the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFDO), among others.

The initiative forms part of the Assembly's broader efforts to promote inclusion, economic empowerment, and equal opportunities for Persons with Disabilities in the District.
